It is good to be off grid and directly use the energy of the sun to generate electricity. But there are also limits to the system. Many modern caravans and mobile homes have quite advanced electrical systems. It often includes heating, microwave ovens, coffee machines, water boilers and other energy consuming equipment. Nice and comfortable, as long as we have sun during the day to recharge the batteries. Recently we experienced what happens after two cold nights with a cloudy day in between. In the middle of the second night we woke up by the sound of our generator. It had to run from 3:00 AM until sunrise. Normally the generator is an emergency device that we seldomly need. For caravans and mobile homes with lighting, a small fridge and a water pump, the system is capable of bridging several cloudy days in a row. With heating equipment, it will not.
Therefore we can not allow electrical heating in winter. We ask our guests to use their gas heater instead. Thank you.
